African Victorian

On Wednesday me and my fellow fashion styling friends/house mates/ pancake makers were asked to form a collaboration with a 3rd year make up student, Melissa, for her final major project. Melissa's project is based on black culture but mixed in with Victorian styling, and our job was to source all the Victorian clothes and accessories. So we decided that we needed a neutral colour palette for the dresses, as Mel wanted to juxtapose the Victorian outfit with African head scarves.

So we hit the shops, sourced a couple of dresses that were fairly simple, yet very delicate and pretty and we decided to make the accessories ourselves - what with being sewing wizz kids and everything. We ended up making a lace collar with a really detailed, embroided, hand made ribbon, and Yasmin also added some pearls to a black lace necklace we found.

Here's a look at the shoot from the sideline...

Topolino - Little Mouse

As one uni project comes to an end, another must begin. The circle of uni life.

Our brand new project is based on designing a make up campaign for Illamasqua, which consists of two beauty shots, one three quater length and the other head shot. For those uncertain of what Illamasqua is, it's a make up brand which refers to itself as 'make up for your alter ego', as it has a litttttttttle something for everyone. So obviously my final images need to be a little quirky and eccentric to really stand out and show off the brands playful nature.

So it's to the drawing board, and who other to take inspiration from than the wonderful Topolino.

Is Print Dead?

So that time in my life has come where I need to start writing my dissertation. Well kind of. I'm currently writing my research project which will blossom into my dissertation next year, so I really need to get on with it and stop playing super mario on the wii, especially as I have a one-on-one tutorial with my tutor tomorrow...

My research question intends on exploring whether print fashion magazines are dead or if they have a place in our future. So I've started reading a BOOK called 'Print is Dead - Books in Our Digital Age' which is a PRINTED book all about how print is a waste and how pages are cages for words. A little contradictory, but I digress. Another piece of literature that caught my eye was an old article in Pop Magazine from the then editor Dasha Zhukova in which she explains print is not dead, but just needs to coincide with technology.

‘With environmental concerns and demand for faster turnover, the shift from print to online is inevitable for many publications. However, art and fashion magazines serve a more aesthetic purpose than an informative one. It is the beauty of the layouts, the quality of the design, the feel of the paper, all the tactile sensations that make these publications worth buying. These magazines (epecially those that are bi-annual) are collector's items of sorts, visual time capsules of the period in which they are published. Since this does not and cannot translate to the web, those magazines worth holding on to should be around for years to come. And ideally, technological advances will actually spur more creativity, more innovation, and thus better magazines.’

No Falta In Malta!

Malta can do no wrong.

I'm just back from spending an amazing weekend in Maaalta with Carl. We left cold England and our S.A.Dness, seasonal affective disorder, behind us on Thursday morning and surprised his dad at work for his birthday.

I'm not putting up any recent photos, the main reason being that I am so pasty right now, but instead ones from the summer in which I am indulging in a little bit of the Maltese culture.
