Jaiden rVa James

A Couple of weeks ago Jaiden Jeremy James, from menswear range Jaiden rVa James and co founder of RE-BEL magazine was a guest speaker at my uni. JJJ spoke about his career in the design industry; how he got started, Somerset House shows, dressing Lady Gaga for her Alejandro video and Fame Monster tour, G-shock collaborations, creating hats worn in a Nick Knight video and then starting his own online magazine. It was amazing to hear how much he had achieved in such a short space of time, which he modestly put down to luck - being in the right place at the right time with the right people.

RE-BEL magazine is distributed by Diesel in London, Paris and New York.

African Victorian

On Wednesday me and my fellow fashion styling friends/house mates/ pancake makers were asked to form a collaboration with a 3rd year make up student, Melissa, for her final major project. Melissa's project is based on black culture but mixed in with Victorian styling, and our job was to source all the Victorian clothes and accessories. So we decided that we needed a neutral colour palette for the dresses, as Mel wanted to juxtapose the Victorian outfit with African head scarves.

So we hit the shops, sourced a couple of dresses that were fairly simple, yet very delicate and pretty and we decided to make the accessories ourselves - what with being sewing wizz kids and everything. We ended up making a lace collar with a really detailed, embroided, hand made ribbon, and Yasmin also added some pearls to a black lace necklace we found.

Topolino - Little Mouse

As one uni project comes to an end, another must begin. The circle of uni life.

Our brand new project is based on designing a make up campaign for Illamasqua, which consists of two beauty shots, one three quater length and the other head shot. For those uncertain of what Illamasqua is, it's a make up brand which refers to itself as 'make up for your alter ego', as it has a litttttttttle something for everyone. So obviously my final images need to be a little quirky and eccentric to really stand out and show off the brands playful nature.

So it's to the drawing board, and who other to take inspiration from than the wonderful Topolino.

Tales of The City

Last night, after some deep thought, I managed to make the final decision on what book to choose for my project. Tales of The City by Armistead Maupin is a story about a girl, Mary Ann who moves to San Fransisco and then her life gets a bit crazy. Very vague description I know, but I haven't read it yet! All I know is that it became popular in 1993 when Channel 4 released a series based on Maupins books 'More Tales of The City' and 'Further Tales of The City', but I'm not going to watch them, not until I've read it anyway.

Teaser Pleaser

Today we've been set a project in uni where we have to design three movie posters based on a book, not any old book though or trust me new Harry Potter posters would be surfacing on this blog, but ones based on the reading list we've been given. There's different types of posters you can choose to do and I've narrowed it down to either a Character poster or a Teaser poster.

I'm leaning towards a teaser, like these 'Black Swan' posters featuring Natalie Portman.

Currently, I'm studying fashion styling at Southampton Solent University and every term we have to do a different project. The last one involved taking a magazine and creating a three page shoot, trend report and cultural happenings page. I chose Dazed and Confused, but my friend Charlie picked the Times fashion supplement 'Style' and asked me to model her shoot. So Charlie, Yasmin, Laura, a chair, camera equipment and a dead deers head trekked down to the darkest depths of Suffolk and made pictures.
